Body found in Castro Valley home

CASTRO VALLEY — Sheriff’s deputies went to a home on a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood Monday night to do a routine probation check. Instead, they found a blood-soaked living room and a dead man inside the Castro Valley house, an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

The man, whose name is being withheld until his family is notified, was in his 20s, Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

Authorities said they are investigating the death as a homicide. Investigators still are trying to determine the man’s cause of death or whether he was the home’s resident who is on probation, Nelson said.

“Clearly, there was some kind of trauma,” he said. “There was a significant amount of blood.”

About 7 p.m., deputies paid a visit to the house on the 4300 block of Omega Avenue near Center Street because its neighbors frequently have called the Sheriff’s Office in recent weeks to complain of heavy traffic and suspicious persons hanging around, authorities said.

When someone opened the door Monday night, deputies discovered the blood and the body, police said.

No arrests have been made and no one at the house has been detained, Nelson said.

A woman and her grown son live in the house, which was the site of a rowdy party Sunday night, said Christina Rodrigues, who grew up in the neighborhood.

“Our neighbors said the party was loud, with lots of cars,” Rodrigues said. “They said it was a crazy atmosphere.”

The neighborhood again was disrupted through the night as several patrol cars and yellow police tape closed traffic along Omega Avenue, forcing students who usually walk to nearby Marshall Elementary School to take a detour.

One neighbor, who has lived on the street since 1947, said the residents of the crime scene have lived there for 15 years but he doesn’t know them very well.

“Used to be I knew everyone who lived from the top of the hill to the end of the street,” said the 66-yearold neighbor, who did not give his name for fear of his safety. “Times have changed.”

The Adobe building, located on the grounds of the Castro Valley Elementary School, was leased to the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District for use as a community center. The Adobe was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project designed by Mario Corbett of San Francisco and built in 1938. The building is located in an elm grove planted by the Castro Valley Boy Scouts in 1926. There are hundreds of 4x9x16 inch adobe bricks made by the W.P.A. from dirt excavated from the site of the Redwood School in Castro Valley. The walls of the Adobe are 16 inches thick. Most of the timbers were hand hewn from discarded telephone poles given to the Castro Valley School District by the Pacific Telephone Company. Stabilized mud was used as mortar and the Glidden Paint Company developed special paint. The original draperies were hand woven by WPA workers from twine supplied by the Castro Valley School District.
